Start with a Strong Foundation
Successful weaning begins long before milk is withdrawn.
A calf that receives enough colostrum, clean housing, fresh water, and quality starter feed will be ready to wean much earlier than one that is poorly managed.
Healthy calves make easier transitions.
Don’t Wean Based on Age Alone
Many farmers stop feeding milk simply because the calf has reached a certain age.
A better approach is to look at how well the calf is eating solid feed.
A calf that is regularly eating calf starter and forage is developing a healthy rumen and is better prepared for weaning.
Growth matters more than the calendar.
Wean Gradually
Avoid stopping milk suddenly.
Reduce the amount of milk over several days while encouraging the calf to eat more solid feed and drink clean water.
This reduces stress and keeps the calf growing well.
Watch the Calf Closely
During weaning, observe the calf every day.
Look for:
* good appetite;
* bright eyes;
* active behaviour;
* steady growth;
* normal dung.
If the calf becomes weak, stops eating, or develops diarrhea, seek advice before continuing.
Keep Nutrition High After Weaning
Weaning is not the end of feeding, it is the beginning of the next growth stage.
Continue providing:
* quality forage;
* calf starter or concentrates where appropriate;
* mineral supplements;
* unlimited clean water.
Good nutrition after weaning helps produce strong heifers that will become productive dairy cows.
The Bottom Line
Successful weaning is about readiness, not just age.
A calf that is eating well, growing steadily, and staying healthy is ready to move to the next stage.
Good weaning practices reduce stress, lower feeding costs, and build stronger replacement animals for the future.
