1. Delaying Colostrum Feeding
The first milk a calf receives, is its first protection against disease.
A calf that receives too little colostrum or receives it too late, is more likely to become sick and grow slowly.
Give colostrum as soon as possible after birth to give the calf the best start.
2. Poor Nutrition
Young calves need more than milk alone.
As they grow, introduce quality calf starter, clean water, and soft forage to help the rumen develop properly.
Poor nutrition today often means a smaller, weaker cow tomorrow.
3 Dirty Housing
Wet bedding, poor drainage, and dirty feeding equipment expose calves to diarrhoea, pneumonia, and other infections.
A clean, dry, and well-ventilated calf pen is one of the cheapest ways to improve growth.
Healthy calves spend more time growing than fighting disease.
4. Ignoring Early Signs of Illness
A calf that becomes dull, develops diarrhoea, coughs, or loses appetite should never be ignored.
Early treatment is usually cheaper and more successful than waiting until the calf becomes seriously sick.
Daily observation saves calves.
5. Forgetting That Water Matters
Many farmers underestimate how much calves need clean drinking water.
Fresh water encourages feed intake, supports rumen development, and helps calves grow faster.
Water should always be available, not only after weaning.

Good colostrum, proper feeding, clean housing, fresh water, and early treatment of illness give calves the best chance to reach their full potential.
