1. Know What You Earn
Do not judge the farm only by litres of milk produced.
Record:
* milk sold;
* selling price;
* total monthly income;
* income from calves, manure, or other farm products.
High production is valuable only when it produces worthwhile income.
2. Know What You Spend
Many small expenses quietly consume profit.
Track major costs such as:
* feed;
* labour;
* veterinary treatment;
* breeding;
* water;
* transport;
* medicines and minerals.
If you do not know your costs, you cannot know your profit.
3. Manage Every Cow as an Investment
Every cow consumes resources.
Ask:
Is this cow producing enough milk, conceiving on time, and staying healthy enough to justify what I spend on her?
Some cows build the business. Others may quietly reduce its profitability.
Records help you know the difference.
4. Plan Before Problems Come
Good businesses do not wait for emergencies.
A dairy farmer should plan ahead for:
* dry-season feed;
* veterinary care;
* breeding;
* replacement heifers;
* farm repairs;
* milk markets.
Planning usually costs less than reacting late.
5. Review Performance Regularly
At least once a month, ask:
* Is milk production improving?
* Are feed costs rising?
* Which cows are performing best?
* Are fertility problems increasing?
* Did the farm make money this month?
These simple questions turn everyday farming into informed management.
The Bottom Line
Dairy farming is not only about owning cows.
It is about managing animals, costs, milk, people, risks, and markets in a way that leaves the farmer with a return.
The farmer who knows the numbers is better placed to improve them.
Treat the cow with care, and treat the farm like a business.
Take Action
Before the end of this month, sit down with your farm records and calculate:
Total dairy income โ Total dairy costs = What did the farm actually earn?
That one calculation may change the way you manage your dairy enterprise.
