Why Enough Rest Matters for Milk Production

Why Enough Rest Matters for Milk Production

A dairy cow does not produce milk only when she is eating. A large part of good milk production happens when the cow is comfortable, calm and resting. After looking at heat stress, overcrowding and poor flooring, the next practical question is simple: Does your cow have enough comfortable time to lie down? If the answer is no, milk production may suffer.

Cows Need Many Hours of Rest

Dairy cows normally spend a large part of the day lying down and resting. Well-managed cows may rest for around 10-14 hours a day.

During this time, blood flow to the udder improves, rumination continues and the cow recovers from standing, walking and milking.

A cow that cannot rest comfortably may spend too much time standing, and that comes at a cost.

Why Some Cows Do Not Lie Down Enough

Common reasons include:

* wet or dirty resting areas;
* hard or uncomfortable floors;
* overcrowding;
* heat;
* poor bedding;
* constant disturbance;
* limited resting space.

If a cow repeatedly approaches a resting area but refuses to lie down, look closely at the environment.

Too Much Standing Creates Other Problems

Long periods of standing increase pressure on the feet.

This may contribute to hoof problems and lameness, which then reduce movement to feed and water.

The effect can become a cycle:

Less comfort โ†’ less rest โ†’ sore feet โ†’ less feeding โ†’ less milk.

Make Resting Areas Inviting

You do not need an expensive cowshed.

Focus on the basics:

* keep resting areas clean and dry;
* provide enough space for every cow;
* use comfortable bedding where possible;
* remove manure regularly;
* protect cows from rain and direct heat;
* avoid unnecessary disturbance during resting periods.

Watch whether cows actually use the space provided.

Observe the Herd

A comfortable dairy herd should not have most cows standing around for long periods when they are neither feeding nor being milked.

If many cows are standing unnecessarily, ask why.

The cows may be telling you something about the shed before the milk records do.

The Bottom Line

Rest is not wasted time.

A cow that rests comfortably is better positioned to eat well, maintain healthy feet, manage stress and produce milk consistently.

Good dairy management gives cows time to feed, and time to rest.

Take Action

Observe your cows about one or two hours after feeding.

Are they lying comfortably and chewing cud, or are many still standing because the resting area is uncomfortable?

That simple observation can reveal an important opportunity to improve productivity.
