Flies Create Stress
A cow that is repeatedly irritated by flies may:
* eat less comfortably;
* spend less time resting;
* become restless during milking;
* kick more frequently;
* waste energy trying to avoid insects.
Individually these effects look small. Repeated every day, they matter.
Dirty Areas Encourage More Flies
Flies multiply quickly where there is:
* accumulated manure;
* wet bedding;
* spilled feed;
* stagnant water;
* poorly drained areas;
* dirty milk-handling waste.
The easiest fly-control programme therefore starts with cleanliness.
Start With the Source
Spraying flies without correcting the breeding areas only gives temporary relief.
Good daily practice should include:
* removing manure regularly;
* keeping bedding dry;
* cleaning spilled feed;
* improving drainage;
* emptying dirty water;
* keeping waste away from resting and milking areas.
A cleaner shed is usually a less attractive place for flies.
Protect the Milking Area
Flies around the udder and milking environment are more than a comfort problem.
They can move between dirty surfaces, wounds and milk-handling areas, increasing hygiene risks.
Keep the milking space especially clean and remove milk residues immediately.
Watch the Cow
Your cows will often tell you when fly pressure is becoming excessive.
Look for:
* constant tail flicking;
* frequent stamping;
* cows clustering tightly together;
* restless milking;
* animals repeatedly rubbing against structures;
* reduced resting during the day.
If many cows are behaving this way, investigate the environment.
The Bottom Line
Cow comfort is affected by more than floors, bedding, shade and space.
Persistent flies are also a daily source of stress.
Good sanitation, drainage and waste management can reduce pest pressure while improving cow comfort, milk hygiene and farm productivity.
Fewer flies. Calmer cows. Better management.

Then ask:
What is attracting them here?
Remove the source before reaching for the spray.
