Why Clean and Dry Bedding Matters for Dairy Cows

Why Clean and Dry Bedding Matters for Dairy Cows

A dairy cow may spend many hours every day lying down. So the place where she rests matters. Wet, dirty or uncomfortable bedding does more than make the cowshed unpleasant. It can increase stress, dirty the udder, contribute to mastitis and discourage cows from resting properly. Good bedding is therefore part of good milk management.

A Cow Should Want to Lie Down

Walk through the resting area and observe your cows.

If cows repeatedly stand when they could be resting, the problem may be the surface underneath them.

Common causes include:

* wet bedding;
* manure build-up;
* hard floors;
* muddy resting areas;
* insufficient bedding;
* overcrowding.

A comfortable cow is more willing to lie down, relax and chew cud.

Dirty Bedding Can Become an Udder Problem

When a cow lies on wet manure or heavily contaminated bedding, the udder and teats come into contact with more bacteria.

That increases the risk of mastitis and contaminated milk.

The cost can quickly become significant through:

Treatment + discarded milk + reduced production + extra labour.

Keeping resting areas clean is therefore much cheaper than repeatedly treating preventable infections.

Dry Matters as Much as Clean

A resting area may look reasonably clean but remain constantly wet.

Poor drainage, leaking water troughs, rain entering the shed or insufficient bedding can create damp conditions.

Check the resting area with a simple test:

Would you comfortably kneel there yourself?

If not, the cow probably does not find it comfortable either.

Bedding Does Not Have to Be Expensive

What matters most is that the resting surface is clean, dry, comfortable and regularly maintained.

Depending on what is practical locally, farmers may use suitable dry bedding materials while ensuring they are changed or topped up before they become wet and heavily contaminated.

The cheapest bedding is not cheap if it contributes to disease.

Make Cleaning a Routine

Do not wait until the resting area becomes visibly dirty.

Build cleaning into the daily farm routine:

* remove manure regularly;
* replace wet bedding;
* repair leaking water points;
* improve drainage;
* keep rainwater away;
* observe which areas become dirty fastest.

Small daily attention prevents bigger problems later.

Watch the Cows

The animals themselves provide useful information.

Look for:

* very dirty udders;
* manure-covered flanks;
* cows reluctant to lie down;
* swollen or painful udders;
* cows repeatedly choosing one small dry area.

These may indicate that the resting environment needs improvement.

The Bottom Line

A clean resting area helps protect cow comfort, udder health, milk quality and productivity.

Good bedding is not simply about keeping the cowshed attractive.

It is about creating a place where cows can rest comfortably without exposing themselves to unnecessary disease.

Clean bed. Comfortable cow. Healthier udder. Better milk.

Take Action

Inspect your cows’ resting area today.

Is it genuinely clean and dry, or have you simply become used to how it looks?

Correct one wet, dirty or uncomfortable area before it becomes a health problem.
