1. Discover the customer before building the processing room
Who will buy your yoghurt?
Schools? Restaurants? Supermarkets? Neighbourhood shops? Households?
How much will they buy? How frequently? What packaging do they prefer? What price will they accept?
A farmer may know how to produce excellent milk but still need to learn an entirely different business: producing something customers repeatedly choose to buy.
2. Processing brings new responsibilities
Fresh milk and processed dairy products require different handling, equipment, skills and quality-control arrangements.
Safe processing, hygienic packaging, refrigeration, shelf-life management and applicable regulatory requirements are essential.
A product that remains unsold or becomes unsafe can quickly erase the expected additional income.
Value addition requires value protection.
3. You don't have to own the factory
Could you supply a processor under an agreed arrangement? Could several farmers jointly explore processing? Could an established processor manufacture a product under a suitable commercial agreement?
Sometimes the best opportunity is not to own every stage of production.
It is to participate intelligently in more of the value chain.
4. Test the opportunity before expanding
Before committing substantial capital, prepare a simple comparison.
For a proposed quantity of milk, calculate the expected revenue from selling it fresh. Then estimate the finished yoghurt that could be sold, its expected revenue and every additional processing and selling cost.
Include potential spoilage and unsold stock.
Where possible, validate the figures through a properly licensed processing partner and a small market test.
If the numbers work, explore expansion. If they do not, the exercise has still protected your investment.
The Radiant Thought
Not every harvest needs another process. Sometimes the wisdom lies in discovering where your contribution creates the greatest value.
The successful farmer does not simply ask, “What else can I produce?”
The farmer asks, “What value can I create, for whom, and at what cost?”
One action this week
Visit a supermarket or dairy-products outlet.
Select three locally available yoghurt products. Observe their prices, package sizes, ingredients, shelf-life information and how they are displayed.
Then ask yourself:
“What would it take for my farm to serve this customer successfully?”
That is where discovery begins.
